Stability depends strongly on physical form. The dry powder is generally regarded as stable for extended periods when held at or below minus twenty degrees Celsius in a sealed, desiccated container. In solution, degradation pathways include deamidation of asparagine and glutamine residues, oxidation of methionine, and aggregation. Reaction rates for these pathways rise with temperature. Repeated freezing and thawing of solutions promotes aggregation, and light exposure can accelerate some oxidative changes. Buffer composition and pH influence which pathway dominates at a given temperature.
Regulatory and quality discussions place the peptide within established guidance for synthetic peptides and biologics. Forced degradation studies, in which samples are exposed to heat, acid, base, peroxide, and light, identify likely degradation products and validate the selectivity of analytical methods. Reference standards allow comparison across laboratories and production batches. Purity specifications reported in the literature usually combine chromatographic purity with mass confirmation. Which impurity thresholds are meaningful for long-term behavior is still debated, and no single universal specification has been adopted across all jurisdictions.
Degradation pathways for tirzepatide include deamidation, oxidation, and aggregation, which are common for therapeutic peptides. These processes can be monitored by size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) for aggregates and ion-exchange chromatography for charge variants. Forced degradation studies under acidic, basic, oxidative, and thermal stress help identify potential impurities. The exact stability profile depends on formulation, concentration, and container-closure system.
Analytical characterization of tirzepatide typically employs reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) for purity assessment and peptide mapping. Mass spectrometry, often coupled with electrospray ionization, confirms molecular weight and sequence integrity. Amino acid analysis and capillary electrophoresis may also be used to detect impurities or degradation products. These methods are essential for batch release and stability studies.
Storage recommendations for tirzepatide generally specify refrigeration at 2–8 °C to maintain stability. The peptide should be protected from light and kept in its original packaging to prevent aggregation or adsorption. Freezing is not recommended because freeze-thaw cycles can cause aggregation or precipitation. Once dispensed, storage conditions and in-use periods follow product-specific labeling, which may allow room temperature storage for a limited time.

Pharmacologically, tirzepatide activates two distinct G protein-coupled receptors: the glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide receptor and the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor. Binding at each target triggers cyclic AMP accumulation and downstream signaling in pancreatic beta cells, adipose tissue and the central nervous system. Because the two pathways overlap only partially, the combined effect on insulin secretion, glucagon suppression and appetite signaling differs from that of selective single-receptor compounds. Affinity is not equal across the two targets, and the clinical meaning of that imbalance remains an area of active study.
Clinical research programs have evaluated tirzepatide in adults with type 2 diabetes and in adults with obesity or excess weight. Trials generally reported reductions in glycated hemoglobin and body weight across treatment periods of several months. Since these studies enrolled defined populations under controlled conditions, the findings describe group averages rather than individual outcomes. Open questions include the durability of effects after treatment stops, variation among subgroups, and the long-term consequences of sustained dual receptor stimulation. Published trial summaries should be consulted for exact measurements rather than secondary accounts.
Tirzepatide is a synthetic peptide built from thirty-nine amino acids. Its sequence is derived from native glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide, or GIP, with several non-natural residues and a fatty diacid side chain attached through a linker. The molecule behaves as a dual agonist at two incretin receptors, GIP and GLP-1, instead of targeting a single receptor. This dual engagement separates it from earlier single-receptor incretin compounds and underpins most of its reported pharmacological activity.
At the receptor level, the compound binds both GIP and GLP-1 receptors and triggers downstream signalling that raises cyclic AMP in target cells. GLP-1 receptor activation is associated with glucose-dependent insulin release, slower gastric emptying, and reduced appetite signalling. GIP receptor activation contributes effects that are less completely characterised, and how much each receptor adds to the overall clinical response is still an open question. The two pathways appear to interact in a complementary rather than a purely additive way.
==== Rivaroxaban binding to factor Xa ==== Rivaroxaban binding to FXa is mediated through two hydrogen bonds to the amino acid Gly-219. These two hydrogen bonds serve an important role directing the drug into the S1 and S4 subsites of FXa. The first hydrogen bond is a strong interaction which comes from the carbonyl oxygen of the oxazolidinone core of rivaroxaban. The second hydrogen bond is a weaker interaction and comes from the amino group of the clorothiophene carboxamide moiety. These two hydrogen bonds result in the drug forming an L-shape and fits in the S1 and S4 pockets. The amino acids residues Phe-174, Tyr-99, and Trp-215 form a narrow hydrophobic channel that is the S4 binding pocket. The morpholinone part of rivaroxaban is “sandwiched” between amino acids Tyr-99 and Phe-174 and the aryl ring of rivaroxaban is oriented perpendicularly across Trp-215. The morpholinone carbonyl group does not have a direct interaction to the FXa backbone, instead, it contributes to a planarization of the morpholinone ring and therefore supports rivaroxaban to be sandwiched between the two amino acids.
The Klang War (1867–1874) began as a dispute between Raja Abdullah and Raja Mahadi over the Klang chieftaincy, with Mahadi rejecting Abdullah's appointment by Sultan Abdul Samad of Selangor. The conflict drew in rival Chinese secret societies—the Ghee Hin Kongsi largely backing Mahadi and the Hai San Secret Society supporting Abdullah—as well as Bugis-descended and Malay chiefs who viewed Mahadi as more legitimate. Fighting spread after Mahadi captured the Klang Fort and Abdullah fled to Malacca, disrupting tin production, trade routes, and British commercial interests in the Klang Valley. At the same time, the neighbouring Larut Wars (1861–1874) between the Hai San and Ghee Hin in Perak similarly destabilised tin-rich districts and alarmed British merchants. Appeals from Malay chiefs for mediation combined with British concerns over regional disorder paved the way for formal intervention, culminating in the Pangkor Treaty of 1874 which established a system of British residents in the Malay states. As Frank Swettenham later wrote, "It is that though the circumstances demanded intervention, we came into the Malay States at the invitation of the Malay Rulers, to teach them a better form of administration." In the Second World War, the Japanese Army invaded and occupied Malaya, North Borneo, Sarawak, and Singapore for over three years. During this time, ethnic tensions were raised and nationalism grew. Popular support for independence increased after Malaya was reconquered by Allied forces.
In early medieval Europe, some accounts stated that Common Vervain was used to staunch Jesus' wounds after his removal from the cross; hence names like "Holy Herb" or (e.g. in Wales) "Devil's bane". Because of the association with the Passion of Christ, it came to be used in ointments to drive out and repel "demonic" illnesses. Vervain flowers are engraved on cimaruta, Italian anti-stregheria charms. In the 1870 The History and Practice of Magic by "Paul Christian" (Jean-Baptiste Pitois) it is employed in the preparation of a mandragora charm. A Royal Navy Arabis-class sloop of the World War I era was named HMS Verbena, and in World War II a Group 1 Flower-class corvette bore the same name; a Group 2 vessel of the latter class was called HMS Vervain. The only Verbena widely found in England in a wild state is common vervain, though it is just as possible that the names reference the popular ornamental verbenas, such as the garden vervain.
== Urea cycle disorders == Urea cycle disorders are rare and affect about one in 35,000 people in the United States. Genetic defects in the enzymes involved in the cycle can occur, which usually manifest within a few days after birth. The recently born child will typically experience varying bouts of vomiting and periods of lethargy. Ultimately, the infant may go into a coma and develop brain damage. New-borns with UCD are at a much higher risk of complications or death due to untimely screening tests and misdiagnosed cases. The most common misdiagnosis is neonatal sepsis. Signs of UCD can be present within the first 2 to 3 days of life, but the present method to get confirmation by test results can take too long. This can potentially cause complications such as coma or death. Urea cycle disorders may also be diagnosed in adults, and symptoms may include delirium episodes, lethargy, and symptoms similar to that of a stroke. On top of these symptoms, if the urea cycle begins to malfunction in the liver, the patient may develop cirrhosis. This can also lead to sarcopenia (the loss of muscle mass). Mutations lead to deficiencies of the various enzymes and transporters involved in the urea cycle, and cause urea cycle disorders. If individuals with a defect in any of the six enzymes used in the cycle ingest amino acids beyond what is necessary for the minimum daily requirements, then the ammonia that is produced will not be able to be converted to urea. These individuals can experience hyperammonemia, or the build-up of a cycle intermediate.
The second main legislative body is the Council of the European Union, which is composed of different ministers of the member states. The heads of government of member states also convene a "European Council" (a distinct body) that the TEU article 15 defines as providing the 'necessary impetus for its development and shall define the general political directions and priorities'. It meets each six months and its President (currently former Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel) is meant to 'drive forward its work', but it does not itself exercise 'legislative functions'. The Council does this: in effect this is the governments of the member states, but there will be a different minister at each meeting, depending on the topic discussed (e.g. for environmental issues, the member states' environment ministers attend and vote; for foreign affairs, the foreign ministers, etc.). The minister must have the authority to represent and bind the member states in decisions. When voting takes place it is weighted inversely to member state size, so smaller member states are not dominated by larger member states. In total there are 352 votes, but for most acts there must be a qualified majority vote, if not consensus. TEU article 16(4) and TFEU article 238(3) define this to mean at least 55 per cent of the Council members (not votes) representing 65 per cent of the population of the EU: currently this means around 74 per cent, or 260 of the 352 votes. This is critical during the legislative process.

An X-ray examination can be used to detect changes in the size, density and position of the kidneys as well as some urinary stones (struvite and calcium oxalate stones are "radiopaque") and soft tissue calcifications. In severely emaciated cats or fluid accumulations in the retroperitoneal space, however, the kidney can only be visualized to a limited extent on the X-ray image due to the resulting reduction in contrast. Excretory urography, in which a radiopaque contrast medium (e.g. Iopamidol, Iohexol) is injected into the bloodstream and its excretion via the kidneys is recorded radiographically. This makes it possible to detect circulatory disorders, dysfunctions of the renal corpuscles and obstructions of the outflow pathways.
=== PD-1 === Pembrolizumab (Keytruda, formerly MK-3475 and lambrolizumab) was developed by Merck and first approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2014 for the treatment of melanoma. It was later approved for metastatic non-small cell lung cancer and head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. In 2017, it became the first immunotherapy drug approved for use based on the genetic mutations of the tumor rather than the site of the tumor. It was shown that patients with higher non-synonymous mutation burden in their tumors respond better to the treatment. Both their objective response rate and progression-free survival was shown to be higher than in patients with low non-synonymous mutation burden. Nivolumab (Opdivo) was developed by Bristol-Myers Squibb and first approved by the FDA in 2014 for the treatment of melanoma. It was later approved for squamous cell lung cancer, renal cell carcinoma, and Hodgkin's lymphoma. Cemiplimab (Libtayo) was developed by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals and first approved by the FDA in 2018 for the treatment of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC) or locally advanced CSCC who are not candidates for curative surgery or curative radiation. Dostarlimab (Jemperli) – was developed by GlaxoSmithKline and was first approved for the treatment of mismatch repair deficient (dMMR) recurrent or advanced endometrial cancer by the FDA in April of 2021. On August 17, 2021, the FDA granted accelerated approval for the treatment of mismatch repair deficient (dMMR) recurrent or advanced solid tumors.
Where there are historical immigrant Chinese populations, the style of food has evolved and been adapted to local tastes and ingredients, and modified by the local cuisine, to greater or lesser extents. This has resulted in a deep Chinese influence on other national cuisines such as Cambodian cuisine, Filipino cuisine, Singaporean cuisine, Thai cuisine and Vietnamese cuisine. Chinatowns across the world have been instrumental in shaping the national cuisines of their respective countries, such as the introduction of a street food culture to Thailand in Bangkok Chinatown. There are also a large number of forms of fusion cuisine, often popular in the country in question. Some, such as ramen (Japanese Chinese cuisine), which originated in Yokohama Chinatown, have become popular internationally. Deep-fried meat combined with sweet and sour sauce as a cooking style receives an enormous preference outside of China. Therefore, many similar international Chinese cuisines are invented based on sweet and sour sauce, including Sweet and sour chicken (Europe and North America), Manchurian chicken (India) or tangsuyuk (South Korea).
The Kingdom of Hanover maintained an army after the Napoleonic Wars. In 1832, King William IV of Hanover and the United Kingdom issued his troops with British Army uniforms, but they differed slightly from their original British versions. When the personal union with the United Kingdom ended in 1837, and Ernst August ascended to the crown of Hanover, he replaced their uniforms with Prussian Army-style ones, which included the pickelhaube spiked helmet for his Guard Corps. By 1866 they wore a more Austrian style of uniform, with only the guard corps keeping the Prussian one. During the Austro-Prussian War, the Hanoverian Army fought and defeated the Prussians during its march south towards Austria, at the Battle of Langensalza. However, it was later surrounded and forced to surrender to Prussia.

Cytosine is a nucleotide that is present in both DNA and RNA. However, uracil is only found in RNA. Therefore, after UTP is synthesized, it must be converted into a deoxy form to be incorporated into DNA. This conversion involves the enzyme ribonucleoside triphosphate reductase. This reaction that removes the 2'-OH of the ribose sugar to generate deoxyribose is not affected by the bases attached to the sugar. This non-specificity allows ribonucleoside triphosphate reductase to convert all nucleotide triphosphates to deoxyribonucleotide by a similar mechanism. In contrast to uracil, thymine bases are found mostly in DNA, not RNA. Cells do not normally contain thymine bases that are linked to ribose sugars in RNA, thus indicating that cells only synthesize deoxyribose-linked thymine. The enzyme thymidylate synthetase is responsible for synthesizing thymine residues from dUMP to dTMP. This reaction transfers a methyl group onto the uracil base of dUMP to generate dTMP. The thymidylate synthase reaction, dUMP + 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate ⇔ dTMP + dihydrofolate, is shown to the right.
==== Irradiation ==== Food irradiation is another notable biological engineering process to achieve food safety. Research into the potential utilization of ionizing irradiation for food preservation started in the 1940s as an extension of studies on the effect of radiation on living cells. The FDA approved usage of ionizing radiation on food products in 1990. This radiation removes electrons from atoms, and these electrons go on to damage the DNA of microorganisms living in the food, killing the microorganisms. Irradiation can be used to pasteurize food products, such as seafood, poultry, and red meat, thus making these food products safer for consumers. Some irradiation is also used to delay fruit ripening processes, which can kill microorganisms that accelerate the ripening and spoilage of produce. Low dosages of radiation can also be used to kill insects living in harvested crops, as the radiation will stunt the insects' development at various stages and damage their ability to reproduce.
== Uses == Flowers brighten and enhance the human environment. Cut flowers and flower arrangements with cut greens bring the outdoors indoors. Many home gardeners harvest flowers from their own gardens, to increase their everyday enjoyment. Garden cut flowers are also used to enhance gatherings of family and friends. These are often enhanced with the addition foliage from other plants. In some cultures, a major use of cut flowers is for worship; this can be seen especially in south and southeast Asia. Sometimes the flowers are picked rather than cut, without any significant leaf or stem. Such flowers may be used for wearing in hair, or in a button-hole. Masses of flowers may be used for sprinkling, in a similar way to confetti. Garlands, wreaths and bouquets are major value added products in many markets. It is common for cut flowers and cut greens to be placed in a vase. Common uses are informal and formal bouquets in a glass vase for hospital visits, wedding bouquets, wedding arrangements, funeral casket displays, large arrangements in hotel lobbies and party venues, boutonnieres, wreaths, and garlands. Cut flowers are used at flower shows at garden clubs throughout the world and flower competitions at county and state fairs in the US. Cut flowers are a common gift for family or friends or just a day brightener on a work station or kitchen table.

Peptide mapping with tandem mass spectrometry is the standard approach. The peptide is digested with an enzyme such as trypsin, and the resulting fragments are matched against the expected sequence.
Higher pH and elevated temperature both increase deamidation rates. Holding solutions at low temperature and near-neutral to slightly acidic pH reduces the extent of the reaction.
Removing water slows hydrolysis and aggregation. The dry powder tolerates longer storage intervals than a solution kept at the same temperature.
RP-HPLC is widely used for purity and impurity profiling. Mass spectrometry confirms identity.
